The manager of Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers, has said that he is not happy with the attitude of Jose Enrique and Stewart Downing and he might think of putting both these players on sale during the mid season transfer window.
Downing had joined Liverpool at the start of the last season after leaving Aston Villa. Liverpool had bought him after paying a transfer fee of 20 million pounds which is certainly not a small amount. But, he hasn’t proved his worth in the team during his 14 months tenure so far.
His performance was way below his standard in the last season. He started the current season well and found the net in Liverpool’s opening match of the season against Gomel on 2nd of August. That was a Europa League match and Downing scored the match winning goal for his club. It seemed that he would justify his price tag in the current season, but, his performance deteriorated after that first match. He was not included in the 18 member squad of Liverpool for the match against Manchester United last Sunday.
Jose Enrique had also signed for Liverpool at the start of the last season. Liverpool had bought him from Newcastle United after paying a transfer fee of 7 million pounds. Unlike Downing, Enrique had performed quite well in the last season, but, he is completely out of nick in the ongoing season and Glen Johnson has been preferred ahead of him in the Premier League matches so far.
The Liverpool manager said, “Enrique and Downing haven’t been in the best of forms in the ongoing season, but, the most disappointing thing is that they just don’t look committed enough. Their approach towards the game is not right and that would frustrate any manager.”
Liverpool Will play against Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday and Downing is expected to be back in the team for that match.
